Arabic Calligraphy Art

Anatomy of Articulation

The throat (Al-Halq) is one of the five major articulation areas (Makharij). Unlike English, Arabic utilizes the full depth of the throat. Mastering these 6 letters is often the first major milestone for non-Arab students.

The 3 Zones of the Throat

ءهـ

Aqsa Al-Halq (Deepest Part)

Bottom of the throat, near the chest.

Produces the letters Hamzah (sharp break) and Ha (deep sigh).

عح

Wasat Al-Halq (Middle Part)

Middle of the throat, the Adam's apple area.

Produces Ain (constricted sound) and Ha (clean hiss). These are often the hardest for beginners.

غخ

Adna Al-Halq (Top Part)

Top of the throat, near the root of the tongue.

Produces Ghain (gargling sound) and Kha (scraping sound).

Tip: Practice these letters with a teacher who can listen and correct you. mispronouncing these can turn "Al-Hamd" (Praise) into "Al-Hamd" (Death/Stagnation) if the type of 'Ha' is incorrect.
