Izhar Letters

The Rule of Clarity: When to pronounce the 'N' sound distinctly and sharply.

Understanding Izhar

Izhar (إظهار) linguistically means "clear" or "apparent". In Tajweed, it refers to the clear pronunciation of a Noon Saakinah (Static N) or Tanween (Double Vowel) without any Ghunnah (nasalization) when followed by specific letters.

The Connection to Throat Letters

The letters that cause Izhar are exactly the same as the Throat Letters. Because the Noon is articulated from the tip of the tongue and Throat letters are from the throat, they are far apart in the mouth. This distance makes it natural to pronounce them clearly without merging.

The Rule

If Noon Saakinah (نْ) or Tanween (ً ٍ ٌ) is followed by:

ء هـ ع ح غ خ

Then pronounce the 'N' clearly. Do not hide it. Do not stretch it.
